Some info on how I work:

After you submit your complete manuscript and the answers to the questions at the bottom of this email, I review your project and, if we accept to edit it, provide you a quote and schedule. Your payment holds your booking, which is usually at least one month out. During this month you are expected to prepare your text for editing using guides and resources I send you upon payment. Then we edit the entire book at four levels: structural, line, copy, and proofread. You review my edits and work on your book between each edit. The structural edit does not contain any in-line redlines in the text--it consists of (1) margin comments in the ms and (2) an additional document covering the entire structure of the book, something similar to the "21-point inspection" of a car plus a detailed outline. The subsequent three levels consist of redlines in the text plus margin comments explaining those edits.

I no longer provide editing samples, edit short works, or edit short portions of works. However I would love to discuss working together when your project is ready to be edited in entirety.

Are you a first-time author? If so, I recommend purchasing a manuscript review before investing in a full edit. This gives you a general idea of what the book needs at the structural, line, and to some extent, copy levels so you can edit much of it yourself for free and better decide what professional editing you need. If you later buy a full edit, the cost of this review, less $200, is applied as a discount.

If your ms has the standard 250 words per page, you may be around 50,000 words. A manuscript review of 50k words is $800 ($200 + 1.2c/word), and I have availability starting Monday, September 9. A full edit (structural edit, line edit, copy edit, & proofread) of 50k words is $5,250 (10.5c/word), and I have availability starting Monday, November 4.

If you'd like to chat more, let's schedule a 15-minute Skype meet-and-greet. My username is "Eye Comb Editors," and I'm available this week or next after 1 p.m. Central Time.

Here's a bit of info about us below. For an exact quote, please answer the questions at the bottom and reply with a copy of your manuscript. Your work is protected by our NDA: https://www.eyecombeditors.com/nondisclosure

Body of Text

Individual editing levels, in cents per word:

  • Structural: 3.9

  • Line: 3.9

  • Copy: 2.9

  • Proofread: 1.6

Check out our definitions of the four major editing levels at www.eyecombeditors.com

Editing Packages

  • Combo (structural, line, copy, and proofread): = 10.5

  • Manuscript Review (light structural, sample line, and recommendation)= 1.2 (+ $200) --> becomes a discount on any editing package

Combo Package

The combo provides a total savings of 1.8c/word off the individual prices (almost 15% off). It consists of three reads. For example, a full edit of a 20,000-word manuscript is $2,100.

Manuscript Review Package

For first-time authors we strongly recommend first purchasing a Manuscript Review. Manuscript reviewers give a more affordable "first look" to a manuscript-in-progress, which authors use to address serious structural errors or chronic grammatical tendencies on their own for free before investing in a full edit. This is essentially a quick, light developmental edit. ECE's manuscript review includes (a) one to four pages of high-level notes on the entire book and (b) a line editing sample of up to one thousand words.

Rate: $200 + 1.2c/word

(The per word portion of this purchase is applied as a discount on any subsequent editing package purchase.)

Add-ons

If anytime during the project you choose to add material or add a read, we can process payment for it at that time.

  • Word-count add-on: Added material is the additional word count times 10.5c.

  • Read add-on: An added read is the cost of that editing level at that word count.

Matter Creation

Front and back matter are the pages at the beginning and end that include sections like Copyright, Dedication, and Bibliography.

We create all matter for $150 per book, or if you have already worked with ECE in the past, you can create it on your own beforehand using the link below. It must adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style:

https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/book/ed17/part1/ch01/psec004.html

Here are some good resources to create it on your own:

Formatting

Before Editing: Books should undergo "pre-editor formatting" before being submitted to an editor. We do this for $100, or you can do it on your own beforehand following this guide:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uxqOurTNcM

After Editing: Eye Comb Editors is pleased to welcome high-quality interior book formatting & design professionals to our team. Interior book design takes two weeks, one week before proofreading and one after. Book design includes one free iteration after the proofread (no tedious change form required), and cover design includes unlimited iterations until you are satisfied. You do not have to order book design through ECE. If you do order from us, you can choose any of the three design items a la carte.

  • Print interior layout: $500

  • eBook design: $375

  • Cover design: $375

Coaching

Every package over $500 comes with one hour of complimentary coaching via Skype, phone, or email (if emails are numerous or extensive beyond routine communication).

Additional coaching: $80/hour

LEAD TIME

Lead time is one week per 15,000 words, per read. We are usually booked out about one month, but you can hold an advanced booking with a full payment or 60% down payment (above $500). Ask about our expedite options.
